My grandfather had that car. Gold with beige interior. He liked to keep cars until they died, which didn't take the Spirit all that long.

I had that same color combination. It was owned and meticulously maintained by a little old lady. Got it with something like 62k on it. Died 2k later.

First car was the worst car, but I had the coupe.

1. The awful turquoise of the 90s.

2. It ate front suspension parts for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

3. Automagic seatbelts (and transmission).

4. Never could keep 4 damn hubcaps on it (but i tried!!!).

5. Poor creature had to deal with me flogging the be-jesus out of it. It was particularly decent at a J-turn.

Come to think of it, I've never really owned a bad car. I've owned a few cursed ones, but they were all pretty reliable..

1993 240sx automatic

Engine went

then the distributor went

then the fuel rail broke and poured gas all over my engine

tranny line leaked, leaving me stranded

battery died

All within 3 months. I was a broke 19 year old so I had to let her go.

A friend of mine had one, white I think, that was pretty used up by the time it got handed down to him. We once got it up to 140 km/h on a short, moderately steep downhill. Very exciting.

I was about to reply that I'd never owned a bad car...but then you had to remind me that I was the proud owner of a 1990 or 91 Mercury Topaz for a couple of months. Died at 91K on the body, 40K on it's second engine.

Thanks for reminding me...

Edit: I should say I wasn't actually the owner, but my girlfriend (currently going on 11 years) was. I got the ignominious honor of working on it every time it died.

I haven't owned many cars, but my least favorite was my Saturn Sc2, like the one pictured. It was purple, manual, and had the trick third door but that's where the cool factor ended. I bought for $3000 and 122k miles. It cost me $2200 to insure it (sucks to be an 18 y/o male) and $1500 to replace the transmission in my first year owning it. After a $350 sensor failed months later, I decided to get rid of my Tupperware-mobile with 144k miles. I got $1400 trade in for it.

1988 Dodge Shadow.

It was a money pit. gaskets, valve seats, timing belt (with 30k miles on the belt), radiator. It was an endless parade of parts and labor. I hated it.

One of my relatives has this, a 2010 one. I've driven it far too many times.

It's comfortable and roomy for passengers. And 35 mpg isn't bad, but keep in mind you could buy a Camry or Accord for $10-20k less depending on options and get the same mileage and a more versatile car.

This thing drove like crap. It was slow, NOISY, the engine sounded it wanted to die, tiny trunk, does not like turning even in the slightest... cluttered dashboard, I could go on and on about how this is such a shitty car. If Lexus discontinued it after 3 years then you know they messed up.

'93 ford tempo in the early 2000's

Hated that POS. Shitty steering, shitty brakes, shitty power, shitty windshield wipers (whatever the passenger side wiped on the down stroke streamed across the driver's field of vision due to wind), shitty transmission, shitty seats, shitty automatic seat-belts, shitty everything. The only heat or air setting that worked was the defrost because a shitty vacuum operated mode door in the exact middle of the car and buried way up near the top under the dash took a shit. It was so shitty that when my wife took it in the divorce I was HAPPY to be the one to get the '78 suburban that was three different colors and got 7mpg.

I never drove the damned thing, but as a passenger I can tell you that the only thing this car generated at speed - besides a minor celebration for the continued success of gravity (yay for hills!) - was mortal fear, a bit of vibration, and the knowledge that nothing lasts forever because the flat stretch up ahead was going to sap off at least 25 km/h from the top speed.

It's not a stretch to say that the Aries K sedan I owned was a better car.

1996 Mazda 626. Picture not mine, but optioned pretty damn close to mine (same wheels, sunroof, color). Vehicle was a nightmare to own.

Sidenote, when changing the waterpump, I somehow neglected to reconnect the wiring for the rev limiter to function and had a very scary experience where I exceeded the redline and the engine took probably 15 seconds to get down from above redline with no throttle input (while I coasted to the side of the road with basically no power)... taking the wheel assembly back off so that I could figure out what I left disconnected was fun.

AC Compressor failed spectacularly, transmission (auto) was as responsive as a hibernating bear in winter in Canada. Sunroof got stuck, heater core went out, radiator leaked... Basically I had a terrible terrible ownership experience.

Toyota Aygo with the M-MT robotised manual transmission. A great deal of noise was converted into very little motive force.

Ford Focus SVT: Burn this shit with fire and pretend it didnt happen. This was easily the worst car I ever owned. While some love this, I know what it really is. Between the incredibly unstable idle, blown intake manifold, ugly ass end, bullshit always on traction control, mediocre interior with squishy shitbag seats, and an audio system that sounds like it was playing through a pack of empty cans, this is easily the worst car I ever owned. I bought it last april, and by November I traded it for the new ST. WORST CAR EVER! I wouldn't suggest this piece of shit to my worst enemy.

Mind you, my SVT was a barely modded, (intake, exhaust) 38k mile 1 previous owner WEEKEND car. It was probably the least abused example of one of these i have ever seen. And it was still shit.

Oh trust me, I have heard plenty of love stories about these cars. Where people say "nothing bad ever happens, quality, easy, fun, what a joy to own" but that didnt happen for me. I would have happily climbed back into the beige chevy prism my grandma gave me when they took her license away rather than drive that shit box another day. Luckily I didnt have to because ST!

Definitely. I'll defend the B13 Sentra to the death based on my ownership experience (still occasionally fantasize about getting a Tsuru , and somehow trying to legalize it or make a 94/tsuru VIN nightmare model). But I've known people who have had terrible experiences with them as well. Sadly no run of cars is flawless, and some models just have more gremlins than others.

I've owned three cars:

1991 VW Golf 1.3 (mk2)
1997 Subaru Legacy wagon
2000 Peugeot 406 coupe

I still own the VW and Peugeot, although the VW has been put in storage June 2013 and I haven't seen it since. The Subaru was easily the worst of these three. Most problems, most rust, highest repair costs, least character, worst mileage.

I'm kidding mostly. I just miss my Cherokee a lot. The ability to go off road at a moment's notice was something I liked, and it was dead-simple to work on (it was an '88). Plus the manual transmission made it fun and I never had an issue in inclement weather.

The E46 3-Series is a great car. They handle well, have plenty of power, and are generally reliable once you take care of a few problem areas. Given that they've been around for over a decade now you can find examples with over 100k miles that have most of the kinks worked out. Just be prepared for BMW-type repair costs and part costs. Thus far at 135k miles (from 111k when I purchased it last March) I haven't had anything break or go bad but I'm sure my suspension could use some new bushings and struts. You should be able to find a nice 330Ci for around $8-9k at a dealer or $6-7k privately. Good luck!

I'm young so I've only owned one car. These are the worst cars I remember my family owning and hating.

1987 Buick Regal T-Type. Leaked fluids faster than you could put them in. Garbage fit and finish.

1993 Buick Roadmaster. Pathetically under-dampened for a car this size; it made the Crown Victoria's suspension feel like a racecar's. Wore out shocks faster than you could blink. Garbage fit and finish.

2003 Hyundai XG350. Uncomfortable and cheap. The front right wheel eventually fell off in a parking lot when the front control arm unexpectedly broke off due to rust. Wasn't covered under warranty because we live in the south. We scrapped it for pennies. Good riddance.
